Acrylic roof coating is water-based and less expensive than silicone. It is UV resistant, environmentally friendly, and easy to clean up. Some consider acrylic more aesthetically pleasing than silicone because the latter tends to accumulate dirt over time. Nevertheless, because of its water composition, an acrylic roof coating cannot manage water ponding, leading to its degradation and chalking (the residue that remains as the material breaks down over time). Therefore, the application of
acrylic coatings is only recommended on steep slope roofs with positive drainage and no water pooling. Even if this is considered, the layer of an acrylic coating applied on a roof is prone to losing thickness over time. Acrylic coatings may freeze at colder temperatures and should be applied at 50o F or more for optimal adhesion.
